Recife Airport: passengers, flights and why it serves the whole Northeast

Recife/Guararapes International Airport, named after Gilberto Freyre, sits in Imbiribeira, about 12 km from the city centre and minutes from Boa Viagem. That position, rare among Brazil's large airports, helps explain what it has become: the busiest terminal in the North and Northeast, and the air gateway for much of the region.

In 2025, 9.9 million passengers passed through it, up 3.6% on the year before. Within Aena's network in Brazil, only Congonhas handled more, at 24.5 million.

The size of REC in numbers

The gap between the 15-million capacity and today's 9.9 million is what gives the airport room to grow without needing another terminal in the coming years.

Why does Recife serve people who live in another state?

This is the point the traffic figures hide. Guararapes does not serve Pernambuco alone. It works as the reference airport for a strip running from the coast of Paraíba to the coast of Alagoas, and for the whole interior of Pernambuco.

The comparison with its neighbours makes that clear. In 2025, Maceió took around 3.0 million passengers and João Pessoa 1.89 million.

Geography explains much of it. Guararapes is about 120 km from João Pessoa, 130 km from Caruaru and 220 km from Maceió, two to three hours by car, almost always along the BR-101.

For anyone living in those cities the maths is simple: Recife has more departure times, more direct destinations and more airlines competing on the same route. Plenty of people would rather drive to Guararapes than take a connection, and those arriving by plane do the reverse, going from the airport to the integrated bus terminal and on to the neighbouring cities.

The distance from those cities changes the profile of who uses the airport. A meaningful share of passengers do not live in Recife, arrive by car, and need to leave the vehicle parked for the whole trip.

The flights out of Guararapes

January 2026 gives a good snapshot of the network. There were 6,921 flights scheduled between take-offs and landings, 11.07% more than in December, and 1,150,371 seats offered. It is the largest air network in the Northeast for the period.

On domestic routes, Azul, Gol and LATAM account for most operations and connect Recife to the country's main state capitals.

Internationally, the airport had 324 flights scheduled for January across 9 distinct connections:

• Portugal leads, with 122 flights in the month
• Argentina comes next, with 114 operations, including a charter from Córdoba
• Spain adds 44 flights, a route that opened in June 2025 linking Recife to Madrid, the terminal's tenth international route

Lisbon, Madrid, Buenos Aires and Miami are the most sought-after direct international destinations for passengers departing Recife.

What changes by 2027?

Aena has announced R$ 580 million in investment at the airport. Work starts in the second quarter of 2026 and should finish by the end of 2027.

The package has two fronts. The first turns 543 thousand square metres of non-operational land into logistics centres, retail and hotels. The second is an intermodal terminal costing R$ 60 million, which will bring urban and air transport together at the same point. The operator estimates 15 thousand direct and indirect jobs.

For passengers, the practical effect shows up in two places: more access by public transport, and surroundings with more services, hotels included, for anyone arriving overnight or departing early.

And those arriving by car?

An airport serving three states receives a great many private cars. Someone leaving Caruaru at five in the morning, or driving from João Pessoa to catch an international flight, has the same thing to sort out before boarding: where to leave the car for a week, two weeks, sometimes a month.
